MA4804 Optimization Theory and Applications
Course Type and Academic Units
Course Objectives
- To present a unified view of the fundamental concepts in optimization
and the diverse range of optimization problems encountered in science,
engineering and business, so as to equip students
with an appreciation of the nature of such problems and with
the knowledge and skills to apply optimization to the design of components,
devices, systems and processes as well as to the solution of various problems
encountered in these fields.
- In addition, emphasis will also be placed
on the fundamental and numerical concepts of optimization that will help
develop mathematical and creative insights into how to visualize,
frame and formulate problems and thereby enhance decision-making skills
for managing complex real-world problems.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students should be able to :
- Describe the various components of an optimization problem,
the basic approaches to solving various types of optimization problems,
and the mathematical concepts behind these problems and their
solution methods.
- Classify the diverse range of optimization
problems encountered in science, engineering and business.
- Formulate these problems for solving.
- Select the appropriate optimization methods for
solving various optimization problems as well as apply
software tools for solving these problems, with an understanding of
the working principles behind the methods and their practical implementation.
Fields of Application
Examples and problems will be drawn from a diverse range of applications, such as :
- design optimization
- structural design
- mechanism design
- optimal control/trajectory problems
- manufacturing processes
- production planning
- staff/manpower scheduling
- capital budgeting
- investment portfolio
- supply chain and logistics
- network problems
- navigation problems
- classification problems
