Three Research Positions
available at NTU IoT Research Group
- Positions 1 & 2: Master by Research or Research Assistant in orbital edge AI systems
Posted in April 2026
Two fully funded Master by Research (2 years) positions are immediately available for the 2026 fall or 2027 spring intake at College of Computing and Data Science, Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore. The candidates are expected to have Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, or communication/information/electronic/control engineering. Good math, good physics are pluses. Main direction of research is orbital edge AI systems on the satellites, with an ambition of scaling up to space data centers. The research will have access to the GPU-equipped satellites that are currently operating on low earth orbits.
The selected candidate will be advised by Dr. Rui Tan and postdoctoral researchers from the NTU IoT research group. Interested candidates are encouraged to browse the work scope and past publications of the research group to ensure a good match. Interested candidates please send CV to tanrui@ntu.edu.sg immediately but no later than April 30th 2026. Shortlisted candidates will be replied and invited for interview on a rolling basis.
Further note: The focus of the research will be on systems, rather than AI (broadly defined), although AI knowledges/skills will be a factor of consideration in the selection process. If the candidate feels unreadiness for a Master by Research program, an employment as a Research Assistant is also an option.
- Position 3: PhD Student in edge AI systems
Posted in March 2026
One fully funded PhD (4 years) position is immediately available for the 2026 fall or 2027 spring intake at College of Computing and Data Science, Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore. The candidate is expected to have a Bachelor or Master degree in computer science, computer engineering, or communication/information/electronic/control engineering. Good math, good physics are pluses. Main direction of research is edge AI systems in the edge-fog-cloud continuum, with objectives or constraints from application performance (e.g., accuracy, time deadlines, etc) and sustainability (e.g., renewable energy utilization, carbon emissions, etc). The research will be informed by and have access to large-scale, real edge computing systems being operated or developed by an industrial partner.
The selected candidate will be co-advised by Dr. Rui Tan and Dr. Arvind Easwaran. Interested candidates are encouraged to browse the work scope and past publications of the two respective research groups (NTU IoT and NTU CPS) to ensure a good match. Interested candidates please send CV to both tanrui@ntu.edu.sg and arvinde@ntu.edu.sg immediately but no later than April 30th 2026. Shortlisted candidates will be replied and invited for interview on a rolling basis.
Further note: The focus of the research will be on systems, rather than AI (broadly defined), although AI knowledges/skills will be a factor of consideration in the selection process. In your email, please highlight your past exposures to system research, if any, e.g., experience in contributing to paper submissions to system conferences (for instance, those listed under the systems category of CSRankings).
About the research groups: We aim to conduct cutting-edge research and publish results at high-profile venues. We have been winning awards at leading conferences. We target at nurturing the next-generation independent researchers in the cyber-physical systems and Internet of Things areas, which is evidenced by our alumni faculty at other leading universities.
