She obtained her B.Eng. and M.Eng. in Chemical Engineering from Tsinghua University, China in 1982 and 1984, respectively. She then worked at the Institute of Basic Medicine, Chinese Academy of Medical Science as an assistant scientific officer/scientific officer for six years. In 1991, she went to the UK for Ph.D. study and received her doctorate from the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy, University of Cambridge, in 1995. After a short span at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, she joined the Polymer Processing Group, Gintic Institute of Manufacturing (now known as Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology) and worked there for about two and half years. She joined Nanyang Technological University in 1999 as an Assistant Professor.
