Strain Rate Effect by Hopkinson Bars

There are three equipment to measure the high strain rate material properties in the Impact Unit of the School of MPE.

1) Split Hopkinson Pressure bar for Compression;

2) Split Hopkinson Bar for Tension Test;

3) Torsion Bar for the Testing of shear response.

The project aims to use these equipment to measure the dynamic properties of Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) and Solders used in the IT and IC chips industry. These properties can then be used in modelling and FEM analysis to predict the dynamic response structures to dynamic loadings. The failure mechanism of these novel materials is also of interest.
