Education and working experience:

Dong obtained his PhD in Materials Science and Engineering and Bachelor of Engineering from Tsinghua University, China. During his study towards a PhD degree, he was granted a Japanese Government Scholarship and studied at Osaka University in 1987 and 1988. He completed his PhD work in 1989 under the MOE Joint PhD Programme.

Dong was trained as a materials scientist and engineer during his undergraduate and postgraduate study at Tsinghua University China and Osaka University Japan. He has more than thirty years experience in x-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy of materials. He has published a textbook covering his teaching experiences in crystallography, X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The textbook has also used his original research work in hydroxyapatite as examples.

Dong developed his research in the areas (please see details) of materials engineering, crystal structure- electronic structure-property relationships, interface structure analysis, and surface modification when he was working in different institutions, including Tsinghua University China, University of Barcelona Spain, A*STAR and NTU Singapore. Dong's team is concerned with exploring the crystal structure/electronic structure - property relationships for metal alloys and ceramic materials to provide guidance for optimising materials performance. Dong has authored/co-authored over 200 scientific publications.
