·       Prof Guan received the Nanyang Research Award, Nov 2023, for his significant contributions to brain decoding algorithms and pioneering work in applying brain-computer interface to various medical applications.

o   Nanyang Research Award : to give the highest recognition to individuals or teams who have made outstanding contributions in extending the frontiers of knowledge.

 

 

·       Congratulations to An Ruyi on winning The Global Undergraduate Awards 2023 (Highly Commended in Computer Science).

o   About: The Global Undergraduate Award is a prestigious global pan-discipline academic awards programme under the patronage of President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins, since February 2012. It serves to distinguish and acknowledge the world’s leading creative thinkers and problem solvers through their undergraduate coursework. It is open to all penultimate and final year First and Second Upper Class students of all disciplines. Top 10% of entrants will be Highly Commended and exclusively invited to UA Global Summit.

·       Congratulations to Shuailei and the team on winning IEEE Brain Best Paper Award. “Sponsored by IEEE Brain, the IEEE Brain Best Paper Award recognizes outstanding original contributions to areas related to neurotechnology and brain research.”

·       Prof Guan is elected to US National Academy of Inventors (NAI) Fellow, Class of 2022. The NAI Fellows Program was established to highlight academic inventors who have demonstrated a prolific spirit of innovation in creating or facilitating outstanding inventions that have made a tangible impact on quality of life, economic development and the welfare of society. Election to NAI Fellow status is the highest professional distinction accorded solely to academic inventors.

 

 

·       Prof Guan received the prestigious King Salman Award for Disability Research (Technical Branch) on 4 December 2022. This Award is to recognize his contributions to Brain-Computer Interface research and development with applications in stroke rehabilitation, ADHD treatment, cognitive training, and mental health.

·       Our warmest congratulations to our students, Aditya Bansal and Vidurveer Duggal, who have been awarded the URECA Undergraduate Research Excellence Award 2021. The award is presented to URECA students who have demonstrated excellent research experience & achievement throughout the URCEA Programme (30 Aug 2021)

 

·       Prof Cuntai Guan was elected to a Fellow of AIMBE (American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering), Class of 2021 (Citation: for outstanding contributions to brain-computer interfaces and neural engineering), 26 Mar 2021.

 

·       We just launched a Research Program, NOURISH: Next-Generation Brain-Computer-Brain Platform – A Holistic Solution for the Restoration & Enhancement of Brain Functions,  funded by AME Programmatic Fund (Competitive), Singapore, Oct 2020. (Program Director: Prof Cuntai Guan. Clinical Co-Director: Dr Karen Chua) 

o   Synopsis: Brain-computer interface technology is promising in creating new digital health solutions for mental health and brain sciences. In this research program, we will develop the next generation brain-computer-brain (BCB) technologies as a holistic medtech solution for the restoration and enhancement of motor, cognitive and emotional functions in one system. We will also investigate the mechanism and biomarkers of brain function recovery.

    • Talk “Brain-Computer Interface for Brain Function Recovery in Stroke Rehabilitation

·       We launched a Joint PhD Program between Nanyang Technical University (NTU) Singapore and Graz University of Technology (TUG), Austria, in the field of Brain-Computer Interfaces, Sept 2020.

o   The topics will be centred around Brain-Computer Interfaces for clinical applications in either spinal cord injury or stroke. Following research topics are possible: deep learning in BCI, transfer from healthy to patients, motor decoding, novel BCI paradigms, interpretability in BCI, etc.

o   The PhD will be jointly conferred by both Universities with the certificate bearing two seals from NTU and TUG. The students will be co-supervised by Prof. Gernot Müller-Putz (TUG) and Prof Cuntai Guan (NTU).

·       We just published a new article which reviews the recent advances in BCI-based post-stroke rehabilitation in three domains: motor, cognition, and emotion. We also discuss the possibility of a holistic BCI system for motor, cognitive and affect rehabilitation which may synergistically promote restorative neuroplasticity.

·       Congratulations to Ravikiran Mane (Ravi) and his team to be at 3rd place in Singapore-India hackathon 2019 with a cash prize.

o   The team proposed a novel solution to the problem statement of Hospital waste management. The multi-layer solution which was extremely cost-effective and scalable in large developing nations.

o   The ceremony on 30 Sept 2019 was graced by PM of India, Mr. Narendra Modi and education minister of Singapore, Mr. Ong Ye Kung, and President of NTU, Prof. Subhra Suresh.

 

 

 

·       The latest result showed that a subject-independent model exceeded the accuracy of the subject-dependent model for a motor imagery BCI using Deep CNN in a large dataset consisting of 54 subjects.

·       We published the result of a large-scale randomized controlled trial in May 2019: 172 children with ADHD went through 24 sessions of BCI based attention training in 8 weeks. Significant reduction in both inattentive and hyperactivity symptoms.

·       We published the result of a large-scale randomized controlled trial in Aug 2018: 227 healthy elderly went through 24 sessions of BCI based cognitive training across 8 weeks. Significant improvement in delayed memory and language.

·       We published an fMRI study on children with ADHD in Aug 2018. It shows that BCI based intervention can help re-normalize brain functional network topology among cognitive networks, which is associated with behavioral improvement and facilitate brain maturation in ADHD children. The fMRI analysis was led by Prof Helen Juan Zhou from NUS.
